Getting your packing organised when moving home can make things a lot easier. In order to achieve an organised pack however, you need to make sure that you have the right packing materials for the job. Below is a list of the items that you’ll need, the best way to get them (as cheaply as possible) and the most efficient way to make use of these items for an organised and stress free pack.

You will need boxes and containers of course, but there are a few cheap and easy ways to get hold of them. The first and most ideal, is to keep any boxes that things you’ve bought are packaged in. These are perfect for moving home, because they are designed to fit your specific goods snugly. Don’t throw these away if possible, instead simply break them down, fold them up and then they are ready for use again when you need to move home. That said, if you didn’t keep these kinds of boxes, then there are other alternatives.

A cheap and satisfactory option is to simply ask for some spare boxes at your local grocery store or even supermarket. Generally, these kind of shops receive a lot of deliveries and throw out a lot of boxes, so most of the time you will be able to get them for free too., and they are more than happy to give them to you.

Packing Tape and Stanley knife

These are fairly cheap to pick up and will be useful after your move for various tasks around the house, so are a worthy investment. Make sure to get heavy duty wide packing tape, as standard household tape won’t do a very good job of keeping boxes sealed. A Stanley knife is preferable to scissors when cutting tape, and can also be used to break boxes down after your move, meaning you can store your boxes with minimum space requirements and have them ready to use again should you need them in the future.

When taping boxes, you can get some extra durability out of them by double taping around the edges. This reinforces the structure and means the box can take a heavier load if things are stacked on top of it. It’s also a good idea to double tape the box closed to make sure they don’t open and are secure.

Labels and organising

Labels will help you organise your packing, which will in turn make the whole removals process a lot easier when it comes to loading your removal van and unpacking at your new home. It also helps avoid any rushed packing, because by organising and staggering your packing you won’t have as much to do when moving day arrives. Labels can be picked up cheaply at any stationary store, but marker pens work just as well, although make sure they can be easily read. You should start your packing a few months in advance, beginning with the things you don’t use very often. As you pack, make sure to label each box with contents and the room they belong in. This approach means that you will gradually pack everything slowly, leaving only the essentials that you need for everyday life when moving day arrives. When it comes to unpacking, you can unload all items to their required location directly in your new home, saving on having to move boxes around once you’ve arrived.
