How to Not Fall Prey to the Most Common Moving Myths

How to Not Fall Prey to the Most Common Moving Myths

19 August 2014

Moving is said to be one of the most stressful events in one’s life. That is why there are so many moving myths out there, making the moment of the upcoming relocation even more hectic than it needs to be. However, if you want to save time and money, read about the following misunderstandings and do not ever fall victim to any of them.

• You do not need to pay in full to the moving company until your items are unloaded.
This misconception is very popular, and it is normal to forget that moving firms operate differently from the other companies. That is due to the nature of the offered services and their main product, which is the labor provided by the movers, consisting of loading and unloading your belongings. So there is an evident risk of not receiving payment, once the job is done, and everything is loaded off. You should always keep in mind that removal companies require payment in full prior to their arriving on site.

• Get rid of the misguided concept that every container you find can function just like a removal box.
Moving boxes are created with the sole purpose of carrying different items and supporting more weight than the regular ones, so bigger resistance and less crushing or tearing is guaranteed if you use them instead of common boxes. There are some good alternatives for finding free moving boxes and going to the local grocery at night, is not one of them. Great place to gather good moving supplies is the liquor store, where heavy-duty boxes are used for transporting the bottles. Also, it will work if you can find boxes of copy paper or book boxes in nearby offices or bookstores.

• The standard insurance, provided by the removal company you hire, covers the replacement of anything that gets damaged or lost during the move.
Most moving companies have different conditions that need to be met in order to have some of the damages reimbursed. Read your contract very carefully and check what the coverage is of the provided insurance. Keep in mind that there is a policy of most moving companies, according to which their insurance does not cover items that were not packed by their professionals.

• Some people think that it is a waste of time to label and do a detailed inventory of your boxes.
While you may find marking every single box you have packed with its contents and destination in your new home, a complete waste of time, you have to look at the situation with a long-term perspective. You will spend much more time when you start unpacking and digging through all the boxes, wondering what is in each of them if you haven’t labeled them. So never underestimate the importance of the proper labeling, which does not need to be considered a lengthy procedure, but a very important one.

• Packing is a perfect time for you to sit down and give some thought to every cherished item you own and have acquired during the time you have lived in your home.
It is nearly impossible to combine the enjoyable and relaxing trip down memory lane during hectic and time-pressured packing. The best thing to do is to pack a few boxes with items that have sentimental meaning for you and label them as such, so once you settle into your new home and have time you can go through them.

One of the great things about moving is that you are not the only one going through that process. Over the past few years, there has been a trend showing that one of every nine households undertakes a relocation once a year. Hence, it is a good idea to keep in mind these most common relocation myths and never fall into a removal trap.
