Moving in: Top Tips 7 for Fast Designs

Moving in: Top Tips 7 for Fast Designs

19 August 2014

Often, after moving into a new home, especially if it’s your first, you’re left feeling a little deflated as the boxes start piling the hallway and you’re left with bare walls, empty rooms and those small odd jobs start piling up into mammoth DIY tasks. The initial excitement of moving house starts to wane as the realism of fixing up a house into a home becomes ever more real. However, our lives are busy and it’s only the fortunate few that can take a week out of everyday life to concentrate on the perfect house, most of us spend months living in a temporary living space, out of boxes and bags waiting for those small tasks to finally get finished. We’ve compiled a selection of ideas to get your house looking more homely straight after moving in.

Walls

If the walls are a little shabby or simply not to your taste changing them to suit your style is quick, easy and makes a massive difference. If the paper is heavily patterned use, rent or borrow a steamer to get that hideous print out of sight in seconds. It’s useful to know what your long term plans are for decorating; wallpaper, paint, dado rails, but for now, a cheap tub of emulsion in a light colour will instantly brighten and modernise a room, making it homely no matter how quick you’re moving in.

Furniture

Perhaps your own furniture is clashing with the décor, or you’ve inherited the landlord’s less than stylish collection or have wound up with a mish mash selection of hand me downs, charity shop bargains and Mum’s old wardrobe. After moving in, they may stick out like a sore thumb but if replacing them is out of the question, they can be fixed up in a couple of hours. Sanding down wooden furniture or varnishing surfaces makes a significant difference, as does stylish tricks such as adding decorative handles, throws, cushions and decorative covers.

Accessories

Accessories make a massive difference to making a new house a home; whilst you’re moving house take note of all those bits and bobs you have such as photo frames, candles, ornaments and knick knacks. These little things make the finishing touches and make bare homes look colourful, personal and up to date. If you’re lacking in your own stylish accessories hit the bargain stores and supermarkets for fantastic and cheap knick knacks for everywhere in the home. Don’t go overboard, in case you change the décor soon, but a few bits and pieces will make settling in a breeze.

Long term plan

Of course, moving house is a long term decision so it’s important to retain your long term ideas. Perhaps you want to modernise, refurnish or drastically improve the new house; over decorating in the first few days might prove a waste of time and money in the future. It’s also important not to lose sight of why you are moving in the first place; a bigger, better or more comfortable home. Don’t go overboard, and remember that you might re-decorate, transform and restyle the house later on, so a few small, finishing touches are all you need to create a homely house straight after moving in.
