Removal Tips and Timeline

19 August 2014

Doing a house move is not an easy task, especially when you need to deal with a tight timeline too. If you are in the process of selling your current home you might have a quick closing deal which also usually means a quick removal. In order to do that you first need to prepare the move to the point where you are ready to go. Here are some tips on how to deal with that.

• Once your house goes on the market you need to start planning the packing and the entire house removal.
• Go shopping for packing materials and supplies. You will need cardboard moving boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, shrink wrap, paper, moving blankets, etc.
• Prepare a budget plan and start to keep track of all moving expenses.
• Organize and clean the closets.
• De-clutter the rooms. This includes deciding what to take to the new house and what to throw away, sell or donate.
• Pack items that you don’t use every day and label the boxes.
• Keep track of the inventory on your list.
• Hire the movers and get a firm estimate along with a list of the services they will provide on the moving day.
• If you need to fly, book your tickets as soon as you know the moving date.
• If you are doing a short-distance move, hire the truck for it at least 4 weeks before the approximate day of the move.
• If you are doing all the packing yourself, check for more information on packing and moving big and heavy furniture pieces.
• 2 weeks before the move call all the utility companies to cancel the services or arrange the change to your new location if it’s a local one.
• Cancel all subscriptions to your address and file a notice for an address change.
• 1 week before the move call the moving company or the man-and-van service to confirm the date and time of their arrival.
• If you have small children plan for somebody to look after them during the moving.
• Notify your neighbors about the move and ask them to leave enough space on the parking lot for the moving truck.
• On the moving day double check every part of the house, garage and basement for any forgotten items.
• Supervise the movers as they load the truck and check if each box is properly labeled.
• Check for damaged items and keep your eyes open. Even if you have hired the most reputable company on the market accidents can still happen.
• Pack the essential boxes or bags and be ready for the journey. If you are driving, make sure you have enough fuel and snacks for the road.

If you have moved before you know how hard it is – children, a spouse, pets, plants, furniture – you need to think about everything within a short amount of time, which can be quite frustrating. Make sure you plan everything in advance in order to feel confident and reduce the levels of stress on the moving day. Nobody can guarantee you a perfect house move, but you can do your best to organize one and be on the lookout for any issues that may arise. General tips are great to get you started but remember to always have your own list and schedule as every house move is different and it depends on the size, distance and budget.
