When you are planning a domestic removal, there are a great many different aspects to cover. You will no doubt understand that most of them come under the fairly obvious territories of getting your things packed up safely, finding a great removals company and generally ensuring that everything is in place before the big day. However, there are a few things that may well be completely overlooked if you are not careful, as they really are not that obvious until the moment that they become an issue, when they are all too apparent! The reality of the situation is that there is a lot to be said for talking to your removals company about everything that can go wrong, as they will have seen a thousand silly mistakes happen over the years that they have been moving people, and one of the key issues that can cause problems without you realizing it will always be accessibility.

To start with, you need to have a look round your house, to give a bit of thought to what items of furniture may be difficult to get out of the house. A large sofa on the top floor may be difficult to get down the stairs, so make a note of it so that the removals team can assess it first thing, or have a look when they do a house survey. The same goes for other large furniture, like side boards, pianos and long tables or wardrobes. These are items that will need to be treated with care, but are very big and heavy, and can cause serious problems, both in damaging the house and being damaged themselves.

Next, have a think about how you are going to get the items to the van. Where will the van be parked? Some removals lorries can take up around three cars worth of parking spaces, so it is essential that you can get a measurement for the vehicle that your removals team will be using, and to apply it to the potential spaces outside your home. In built up areas and in cities, there can be serious issues with parking, and you may have to talk to your neighbors and the council to see what allowances you can make on the day in question for having such a large vehicle outside your property. In some ways it is likely that you will be able to talk your neighbors round to getting their cars moved for you, but you may find that council owned parking spaces are very expensive on the meter for a whole day, especially if you are taking up three of them!

A slightly harder part of the job is to ensure that the removals team can access the new place, as obviously you don’t live there yet. This is especially difficult if the new place is a fair drive away, but you can combine the trip with other checks on the property. If there is a thin driveway or a narrow gate, then you need to measure it up and send the information to your removals company, so that they can assess the best way to get past the issue. There are horror stories of having to park a mile away from the new house and hiring a man and van to do the last leg in repeat trips, simply because the lorry could not get down the single lane track that lead to the house!
