You might know the feeling, hearing the van door slam and seeing your removals men driving off for the last time then stepping into your new home and thinking, ‘Oh my goodness where do we start?’

The truth is no one can pack your home up better than you can, as no one can make sense of years of possessions and memories better than you. It’s nearly impossible, no matter how good your removals men are, to communicate exactly what you have in mind for what goes where and how certain items are to be packed.

Of course, not everyone has the time or ability to pack up themselves, which is precisely when the brilliant removals men come in. However, if you’re just hiring a removals man because you don’t feel up to the task then just read these few bits of advice and you’ll see how wrong you were.

Advance Planning
This is without a doubt the most important tip to managing your packing like a professional. It is never too early to start planning when you’re moving house, the sooner the better. In the months leading up to your move start building an inventory for each of your rooms and what’s in them. It may seem like a lot of work and very time consuming but it will pay off when you’re trying to unpack at the other end. In the months leading up to your move it’s wise to start collecting useful bits for packing like newspaper, boxes of all sizes, kitchen roll and Sellotape.

Colour Coding
There are many different options when it comes to organising your boxes to be ready to move but one of the easiest and most successful has to be colour coding. Either get yourself a range of coloured stickers, some felt tip pens, or even some spray paints, then assign each room in your house a colour. This means that throughout the move you can direct everyone helping you, whether hired or friends, as to which colour goes where. It will save you losing track of boxes and it means you’ve already taken a step to organising everything in your new home.

Valuable Items
One of the worst parts of moving house is the possibility of something very valuable getting broken. Whether it’s an expensive decoration or a sentimental family heirloom, transporting your beloved goods across a city or a country without damaging them can be very daunting. The key to ensuring your valuable safety is identifying them early on in the move and preparing them. Pack them first covered in bubble wrap and pack them together. Avoid throwing them in the boxes at the last minute. One tip is to pack them with your bedding, that way they have an extra layer of padding at no extra cost.

Boxes
This one may seem obvious but it really is worth planning what boxes you are going to need before it’s time to pack. Have a look around your home and get an idea of how many boxes you are going to need. Consider your items’ shapes and sizes; you may need a few different kinds of boxes. If you invest in the right boxes, for example boxes with temporary hanging systems, then you will find packing and then unpacking a lot less stressful. Also make sure to allow time to construct your boxes, if you buy them, most will arrive flat packed so it will take some time putting the together.

There are no great secrets or tricks of the trade when it comes to moving house; for a house move as good of professional proportions all it takes is advance planning, preparation and a good list!
